About the Hobby
What is tabletop wargaming?
Tabletop wargaming is a strategy hobby where players command miniature armies on a tabletop battlefield. Using rules, dice, terrain, and carefully planned tactics, players compete in exciting scenarios that combine strategy, creativity, and storytelling. It’s a hobby that includes collecting, building, painting, and playing with miniatures.
How is tabletop wargaming different from board games?
Unlike traditional board games, tabletop wargames use customizable miniature armies, three-dimensional terrain, and detailed rule systems. Every army can be built and painted to match your own style, making each game a unique experience. While board games usually come with fixed pieces, tabletop wargaming offers endless opportunities for customization and strategy.
What do I need to start playing?
Most games only require a starter army or warband, the game’s rules, dice, measuring tools, and a willingness to learn. If you’re completely new, you don’t need to buy everything immediately—our community is happy to help you get started.
Do I need to buy an army before trying the game?
No. Many members of the community are happy to provide demo armies for newcomers so you can learn the game before deciding what to collect. We always recommend trying a game first to find the one you enjoy most.
How much does it cost to get started?
The cost varies depending on the game you choose. Smaller skirmish games generally require fewer miniatures and have a lower entry cost, while larger army-based games may require a bigger investment over time. Many players build their collections gradually, making the hobby more affordable.
How long does a typical game take?
A learning game can take around 30 minutes to an hour, while standard matches usually last between 2 and 3 hours. Larger events and tournaments may feature multiple games played throughout the day.
Do I need to paint my miniatures before playing?
Not necessarily. Many casual games welcome unpainted miniatures, especially for beginners. Painting is one of the most rewarding parts of the hobby, but you can learn to play first and paint your collection at your own pace.
Can I borrow miniatures or use demo armies?
Yes. Depending on availability, community members and organizers often provide demo armies for new players. This allows you to experience different factions and playstyles before deciding what to collect.
We also organize Learn to Play events throughout the year where beginners can try different tabletop wargames in a relaxed, beginner-friendly environment. These events are designed to help new players learn the rules, ask questions, and enjoy their first games with guidance from experienced community members.
Where can I learn the rules and improve my skills?
The best way to learn is by playing with an active community. You can join our Learn to Play events held throughout the year, participate in demo games, attend community meetups, and play alongside experienced hobbyists who are always happy to help new players.
If you have a PC, you can also book a learning session with one of our volunteer Game Masters using Tabletop Simulator. It’s a great way to learn the rules if you don’t have miniatures yet, live outside Davao, or simply prefer learning from home.
If there isn’t an active community in your area, we’re happy to recommend hobby stores, clubs, or gaming groups near your location whenever possible. Our goal is to connect you with a welcoming local community where you can continue learning, make new friends, and enjoy the hobby wherever you are.
